At first glance, Death Cab for Cutie might seem like an odd choice to write the first single from the upcoming “New Moon” soundtrack.

After all, unlike Paramore — whose “Decode” kicked off the ultra-successful “Twilight” soundtrack — none of the guys in Death Cab are “Twilight” obsessives. But before you judge too harshly, consider DCFC bassist Nick Harmer: He’s been to Forks, Washington — the sleepy town author Stephenie Meyer set the “Twilight” saga in — and he’s been there for fun.

“Oh yeah, I’ve been there a bunch. And I went before it was the place from the ‘Twilight’ books. It’s definitely one of those Northwest towns you hit once or twice, and it’s awesome she chose to set the novels there,” Harmer told MTV News. “It’s part of your trip through [Washington’s] peninsula. There’s not a lot of civilization out on the coast — I’m not being disrespectful, there are no giant cities out there — it’s just towns, and you stop at all of them to see what they’re all about.”

Harmer knows a thing or two about Forks (for the record, he says it’s “very nice” there), and he used that knowledge to help his Death Cab mates pen “Meet Me on the Equinox.” The song will debut on MTV.com on Sunday, September 13, the day of the MTV Video Music Awards. It’s a song the band would’ve been endlessly proud of even if it didn’t get picked to be the lead single from the “New Moon” soundtrack (which hits stores October 20).

“We wanted to record a song that we loved and we would use on an album or anywhere and submit it to this process, and if they passed on it — if they were like, ‘Hey, you know what? This isn’t quite right for us, thanks a lot for trying’ — we’d still have a song out that we’d be proud of, that we could put somewhere else. For us, it was a no-lose situation,” Harmer explained. “What was most important for us was to get the material right first … and it tied into these films, especially ‘New Moon,’ because if you strip away all the vampirism and the werewolves and the Northwest and everything, basically, the ‘Twilight’ series is just a big romance novel. It’s a big story about love, and that’s a major theme for us.”

And as luck would have it, the tune did get picked, which means Death Cab are now gearing up to shoot a video for the song (they’ll film it later this week in Toronto). And though details about the clip are still slim, Harmer seems to be onto something with his idea — one that will no doubt endear him even further to “Twilight” fans.

“The safe route would be to go with the straight performance video, like that Paramore video. But I don’t think we’re going to be outside in the woods … you know, been there, done that. I don’t think we’re going to try to cut a narrative in where we’re all dressed up like vampires running around with fake teeth in,” he laughed. “I’m of the mind-set that the more Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner you can throw in the video, the more popular the video is going to be. Nobody wants to look at us, so we’ll probably be standing in the shadows.”

HOW TO BE

NEW YORK, Aug. 27 /PRNewswire/ — Robert Pattinson’s portrayal of brooding, tormented vampire Edward Cullen in the blockbuster “Twilight” film series has made him one of Hollywood’s hottest new stars. Now, watch as he reveals another, surprising side in HOW TO BE, a side-splitting comedy coming to DVD from IFC Films and MPI Media Group. A must-see for all Pattinson fans, the DVD hits stores on November 17, 2009. The disc includes an exclusive interview with Pattinson, never-before-seen footage and many other extras.

In HOW TO BE, the young British sensation Pattinson stars as Art, an aspiring musician stuck in a rut. Twenty-something Art is a supermarket worker who has just been dumped by his girlfriend and is forced to move back home to live with his emotionally distant parents. Art is hopeless and depressed until he discovers the best-selling self-help book It’s Not Your Fault and spends his inheritance money to hire the book’s oddball author, Dr. Levi Ellington, as his live-in life coach to get him through his “quarter-life crisis” and help him be “more normal.”

Pattinson reaches new heights as an actor as he impressively embodies both Art’s self-pitying side and his droll, hilarious wit. The actor also performs on the film’s pop-rock soundtrack — a collection of original songs and classics by artists including The Roches, Captain Beefheart and Love.

His performance in HOW TO BE earned the young star Best Actor accolades at the Strasbourg International Film Festival, while debuting director Oliver Irving received the Audience Award at the New Orleans Film Festival. Amanda Bell of Examiner.com called the film “completely entrancing and beautiful,” adding, “Robert Pattinson’s character becomes someone you just want to reach out and hug.”

HOW TO BE‘s sterling cast also includes Rebecca Pidgeon (The Spanish Prisoner, TV’s The Unit) and Michael Irving (Ruth Rendell Mysteries) as Art’s parents, Powell Jones (Anna Karenina), Alisa Arnah (Wallander, Jane Eyre) and newcomers Mike Pearce and Johnny White as Art’s best friends.

The DVD is packed with bonus material: a 20-minute making-of featurette including extended scenes; behind-the-scenes footage and an interview with Robert Pattinson.

Death Cab for Cutie’s contribution to the “New Moon” soundtrack, “Meet Me on the Equinox,” will premiere on MTV.com on September 13, the day of the Video Music Awards.

In an exclusive interview with MTV News, DCFC bassist Nick Harmer talked about the song — which will be the lead single from the second film in the “Twilight” series — and the mysterious way it ended up on the most-anticipated soundtrack of the year.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

“We didn’t expect it would be chosen for the first single — we were thinking it would be a part of the soundtrack, maybe,” Harmer laughed. “I have no idea if [‘Twilight’ author] Stephenie Meyer approved it or what. It’s been an exciting process, because we’ve been so removed from it. We were in L.A. for a week and we went into the studio and wrote and recorded the song and submitted it. We didn’t know where anything stood, and then we just got a call last week like, ‘Guess what — your song has been chosen as the first single.’ ”

Harmer is the first to admit that Death Cab and “Twilight” seem like an unusual pairing (only guitarist/producer Chris Walla has read the entire series), but upon closer inspection, they actually have plenty in common: most of which has to do with geography and, of course, matters of the heart.

“The big connection for us is ‘Here’s a wildly popular book series about vampires — which are awesome — set in the Northwest,’ and we happen to be from the Northwest as well, so there’s this sort of hometown pride kind of thing going on,” Harmer said. “I’m kind of happy that Stephenie Meyer put Forks, Washington, on the map for the entire globe.

“I think that a lot of our songs in general concern a lot of the things the main characters in the books are going through: There’s a lot of stuff about relationships beginning and ending, and the questioning that happens around being in love and falling out of love,” he continued. “That’s a comfort zone for us, so a lot of the lyrical content [frontman] Ben [Gibbard] writes also happens to line up with what the characters are going through in the film. Basically the ‘Twilight’ series is about love, and that’s a major theme for us. So, it wasn’t difficult for us at all.”

As for the song itself, Harmer describes it as “pretty dark and brooding, lyrically,” and though it was written specifically for the “New Moon” film, don’t expect it to vary much from the Death Cab formula.

“I’m pretty sure Ben didn’t try to write a song from the perspective of one of the characters from the novel. The emotional stuff is what he homed in on, because that’s what we do,” he said. “It’s an uptempo song … it fits right into the Death Cab canon. The lyrics are darker and brooding, the music is a little more up. I don’t know if it’s a rock song … when you hear it, you’ll think, ‘Yep, that’s a Death Cab song.’ ”

Gossip Cop posted this article:

Not only is Robert Pattinson hot on screen, but once again he’ll soon be hot off the presses.

Gossip Cop hears the good boys and girls at Us Weekly are busy working on another bookazine – hard cover magazine – devoted to the “Twilight Saga” and its cast since the last one was so successful. A source at the magazine tells Gossip Cop the 120 or so page book, which will come out before the film’s eagerly awaited release on November 20, will be on sale at Barnes & Noble and in certain supermarkets for $10.

So what’s in the “New Moon”-timed bookazine?

The staffer says there will be great portraits shots of all the stars, including Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner, a plot summary of “New Moon,” dish from the set of “Eclipse,” a section on what the stars “were like in high school,” “the A-Z of Robert Pattinson” and others, and yes, the book will delve into the hot stars’ love lives.

But in case Us Weekly doesn’t fill all your “Twilight” needs, Gossip Cop is told that rival People magazine is also hard at work on a special edition to similarly coincide with the release of “New Moon.

Hmmm… something tells me it’ll be full of stuff we already know and pictures we’ve already seen. But one can hope.

I guess I can kinda see the necklace.. My 12 year old self would totes rock one of those. But a pillowcase? The seller has even more of them. Is that even an actual pic of Rob or is it a manip? I could never tell… Anyway that’s beside the point. How weird would it be trying to fall asleep on that? *shudder*

I wonder if it’s against copywright laws for people to be making money off of those images…
